SOSi is seeking a Media Desk Officer to provide comprehensive advice and understanding to customer staff on cultural, social and political aspects/implications of communication in order to engage media, tailor messages, and monitor audiences more effectively in order to support the command’s strategic communication objectives. The Media Desk Officer will reports to the SOSi In-Country Program Manager.


  • Monitors media and provides cultural insight into current trends 
  • Works with local Afghan media to coordinate media engagements 
  • Provides media engagement support to correct inaccurate media reporting 
  • Conducts daily media monitoring to gauge political and public sentiment as it pertains to the mission
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Active DoD SECRET clearance   
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Public Affairs, Mass Communication, Public Diplomacy or other related field and experience and familiarity with the intern
  • Minimum of five (5)  years’ experience working as a senior-level media or communications counselor ational media environment is required; Master’s Degree is strongly preferred 
  • Be able to communicate fluently and effectively verbally, and possess excellent writing skill sets, in English, Pashto and Dari, as well as other applicable Afghan languages or dialects spoken where assigned. An ILR proficiency level of 4 in listening, reading, and writing is required 
  • Able and willing to translate documents and conduct real-time, accurate and concise oral interpretations of conversations 
  • Proficient operating required computer and communications equipment, including word processing, graphic presentation and spreadsheet software.  Must also be capable of using a Dari/Pashto keyboard in conjunction with their duties 
  • Excellent written, oral, briefing, interpersonal and technical skills 


  • Personnel will work in harsh and austere locations in Afghanistan 
  • Ability to lift and/or move objects or packages of up to 25 lbs 
  • Work environment is often stressful and detail-oriented
