SOS International LLC (SOSi) is seeking a full-time Afghan Language Specialist/Cultural Advisor for on-site interpretation and translation services. We are looking for an individual with skills in Pashto, Dari, and Farsi. Personnel can expect to be deployed to Afghanistan and will live and work in an area designated by the U.S. Government as an Imminent Danger and Hostile Fire Zone.

The Afghan Language Specialist/Cultural Advisor will be required to submit to various pre-deployment medical screenings and be of sufficient physical health to endure at least 320 days of 365 deployed to potentially hostile and austere locations. Personnel are required to meet US military standards for deployment to the Theater of Operations. The Government will provide billeting for personnel during pre-deployment, processing, and at deployment locations.


• Prepare idiomatically correct and technically accurate translations of critical, sensitive, and unformatted material; material will be written by and for subject matter experts on a wide range of highly complex scientific, technical, and military subjects
• Write and speak in clear, concise grammar and pronunciation in Pashto, Dari, Farsi and English
• Demonstrate in depth familiarity with the culture, economics, history, and societal/ethnic/tribal aspects of Afghanistan
• Conduct consecutive, accurate translations and summaries of material
• Provide idiomatic translations of non-technical material using correct syntax and expression to and from the target language and English
• Read and translate handwritten material
• Scan and process material, utilizing the target language for critical and essential elements of information
• Tailor language to fit audience
• Counsel, persuade, negotiate, and represent a point of view
• Conduct interpretation simultaneous, consecutive, escort, telephonic, and/or voiceovers


• Current SECRET or TOP SECRET Clearance
• Fluency and literacy in Pashto, Dari, Farsi and English with the ability to score at least 3+ on the Inter agency Language Round table (ILR) scale for English and 4 for Pashto, Dari and Farsi 
• Understands both the American and Afghanistan cultures and be open-minded and committed to working towards a free and democratic Afghanistan
• Understands speech (in a standard dialect), inferences, and emotional overtones and rarely needs to ask for paraphrasing or explanation
• Writes effectively in most formal and informal exchanges
• Understands all styles/forms of speech and has a strong sensitivity to social linguistic and cultural references
• Able to deal unobtrusively with the local populace
• Familiarity with and ability to conduct oneself in accordance with the local culture and customs
• Works cooperatively with U.S. Forces, and other Coalition forces and personnel
• Functions during a level of heightened state of threat, during extended periods of high pressure and stress
• Functions as an integral member of a team of highly trained professionals responsible for the safety and security of personnel and resources
• Able to use Microsoft Office



• Personnel will work in harsh and austere locations in Afghanistan
• Ability to lift and/or move objects or packages of up to 25 lbs
• Work environment is often stressful and detail oriented
